The Asian sheep-dogs are dogs above average and large growth, rough type of constitution,
strong, courageous, mistrustful to strangers, unpretentious, easily adapting various climatic
conditions. The basic areas of distribution of the Asian sheep-dogs are republics of Middle
Asia and areas adjoining them. The height in withers for male dogs is not below 65 cm, for
female dogs is not below 60 cm. Special appeal of the Asian wolfhound is that it’s appearance
hasn’t changed at all for last three thousand years.
Lately these dogs are named "ALABAY". Today we experience the boom which has begun in 1998 on this breed
of dog. It has not bypassed even such countries with the strongest cynologic traditions as Germany and Italy.
But having passed the explosion of Caucasian sheep-dogs popularity, we have appeared to it more prepared.
Besides in conditions of a megacity the Asian sheep-dog is in every respect more convenient then Caucasian;
it is quieter, more appeasable character relieves problems among even beginning dog breeders.
Character and behaviour
Type of the maximum nervous activity is counterbalanced, quiet. Prevailing reaction - defensive in the active form.
Hair covering
Hair rough, direct, with well developed underfur. On head and forward surface of legs hair is short, skintight. Depending on hair length the dogs can be:
а) with extended (7-8 cm) integumentary hair on ears, neck, back surface of forward and back legs and on tail;
b) with short (3-5 cm) and smoothly adjoining hair.
Color
White, black, grey, pale-yellow, red, striped, skewbald and spotty.
Head
Massive, wide in a cranial part, with strongly developed cheekbones. Forehead is flat, transition to a muzzle hardly appreciable.
The muzzle is a little bit shorter than length of forehead, wide in the intereye part, almost not narrowed
in a direction to nose. At survey in front and from above it seems rectangular, and
in profile has a obtuse form with a thick upper lip hanging down on edges. Nose is large,
black. Light colored dogs may have a brown nose.
Ears
Ears are shortly stoped in puppy age.
Teeth
White, large, in complete set, tight to each other. Cutters at the basis are located in one line. Scissor type bite .
Neck
Short, brawny, low, approximately under a corner 30-40 in relation to a back line.
Chest
Wide, deep, with round ribs. The bottom line of chest is on one line with elbows or below them.
Back
Strong, straight, wide.
Tail
Highly placed, crescent form, lowered, reaches up to jumping joint. It is shortly cutted.
